The next stop on my review tour was San Diego Organic Collective. A club I had always intended on checking out, but never quite actually got around to doing so. To tell you the truth, I think I've been hesitant due to some of the recent reviews I've read. Anyways, I'm glad I was finally able to make my way out to SDOC.
They're located in Point Loma, off of Nimitz, pretty close to Point Loma Seafood Co. and next door to the Brigantine (if you're familiar with the area). They were fairly easy to find and there's a huge parking lot just past them on the right.
Once inside I was greeted by two friendly ladies working the front, which in turn quickly verified me and sent me to the waiting area (got some free bottled water too). Their waiting room consists of two conjoined areas; equipped with flat screen, about 4-5 rasta colored couches, a couple chairs, table, and magazines. With all the places to sit, it kind of makes you think this place can get pretty busy at times. They even had a little flow going at 2:30pm on a Tuesday! I was a little surprised that they allowed up to three members at a time in the nug room, even with only 1 BT, and a narrow nug room at that. I really didn't mind the small wait though, it allowed me some time to peruse. They had what looked like a 52inch flat screen displaying the menu, some mother plants sitting pretty, just waiting for the dollar/clone days. A large selection of brownie/bar type edibles, candies, and sodas, but no concentrates. Apparently the local law enforcement asked them to 86 the hash??? Bummer! I rely on concentrates sometimes to provide me with the potency I need when in the midst of an insomniatic attack. I hope this is not a trend, I'm losing sleep already!
SDOC is truly a club that has something for everyone. Whether you have $25-$30 to spend on a eighth or $50-$60, you'll definitely find something decent for that price range. The cheapest gram is $10 and capped at $20, cheapest eighth is $25 and capped at $60. A fair amount of their flowers are greenhouse/outdoor grown, but appropriately priced. I actually saw a couple inexpensive strains that looked damn good..I know where I'm going to get my blunt material from now! I was a bit disappointed that they no longer had any of the strains pictured on weedmaps, so unfortunately they're not eligible for a NugPorn review. The BT told me when choice strains arrive, they tend to fly off the shelves. In the half hour I was there I saw maybe 5-6 other members donate, all looking for bud they were 12 hours late for. The BT was pretty cool about it and let me handpick my 3 samples. I went with 2 indicas and 2 hybrids (the fourth sample was some shake and tiny kernels of Cotton Candy Bubba the BT salvaged for me to try). This club definitely needs to invest in a nice magnifying glass w/ light. They're currently providing a couple of low magnification pocket thingamajiggies that don't emit enough light and are better for a person with bad eyesite than for someone checking trich count and color.
On to the medicine.
**Platinum Purple (Indica $20/$50)**
My favorite of the samples I was given and probably would've been my NugPorn pick. The first thing you notice about this strain is its color. The buds are predominantly dark purple/violet brushed with dark green and small patches of light green, surrounded by beautiful tan/orange pistils. Flowers are neatly trimmed and have a nice sparkle to them. The smell is very earthy, foresty even, with a hint of purp. Very GDPish if I may say so myself. Extremely earthy and spicy tones on the taste, and the faint flavor of purp. The high was immediately felt moving through my head, muscles, and joints..very relaxing and left me glued to the couch with heavy eyelids. PM med all the way.
**Betsy (Hybrid $20/$50)**
The Betsy has a very unique smell. A sweet and sour, cat piss, lemon grass scent with hints of earth and spice. It has a powdery olive green look, very sparse/airy, pretty leafy and didn't see too many of its thin, dark red pistils. Betsy is literally frosted with trichs and they appear to be fighting over the limited leaf space. Sadly I couldn't get any taste out of her, even when vaped I wasn't able to zero in on any flavors. All I got was a woody/bonfire aftertaste that was not very enjoyable. It took a while before I really began to feel its effects which I felt were pretty mild and mostly heady. I would definitely still be able to perform at work while medicated on this strain.
**Blue Dream (Hybrid $20/$50)**
Not the best smelling Blue Dream I've smelled, I got more of a sage/spice/herb scent than the fruity/citrus aroma this stain usually packs. Buds are bright, light green and loaded with pumpkin orange hairs. A little leafy, but delicious looking with its glowing powdery trichs. However, the taste was pretty bland and left a grassy/outdoor flavor in my mouth. I felt a quick head change after one bowl, but it wasn't very intense. I would say this strain is sativa dominate and could be taken as an AM med.
**Cotton Candy Bubba (Indica $20/$60)**
I wish I could've tried a better sample of this strain. I'd be lying if I said I was able to make a professional determination on its quality. With the sample being mostly shake and a few corn sized kernels, I was only able to detect a faint sugary smell similar to its moniker. Under my microscope the light green pebbles looked like shiny little Christmas trees adorned with chocolate/burgandy colored pistils. Its taste shared some of those same sugary tones I picked up in its odor and a real smooth aftertaste. The high was heavy and extremely cerebral. I felt like taking a nap soon after medicating.
As always, for all my findings I use a L.E.D. magnifying glass, 420 scope, sparkling clean 2 foot binger, bubbler, and V2 volcano vaporizer.
